Vocation Law Path

Professional Mentoring for Lawyers

Mentoring for lawyers in private practice, public service, and in-house roles, focused on professional judgment, integrity, vocation, and the responsibilities of a life in law.

One-to-One

Judgment, Integrity, and Professional Character

Drawing on four decades in government and private practice, I mentor lawyers in private practice, public service, and in-house roles who want to examine the responsibilities of their work and the kind of lawyer they are becoming. Our conversations address professional judgment, service to clients, ambition, competition, money, and the relationship between professional success and character.

Develop professional judgment

Examine ambition and success

Consider duties to clients and others

Reflect on vocation and character

Focus Areas

What I Can Help Explore

Professional Identity

Consider what makes a good lawyer, how ambition and professional success shape your choices, and the kind of lawyer you are becoming.

Professional Judgment

Examine how you exercise judgment, take responsibility, and respond to competing demands from clients, colleagues, and your organization.

Vocation and Responsibility

Reflect on the purposes of practicing law, your responsibilities to clients and others, and the place of professional work within a good life.

How Mentoring Begins

We begin with one defined initial session, followed by a tailored recommendation for further work.

This is a non-legal professional mentoring service. I do not provide legal advice, representation, or advice on specific client matters. Mentoring does not include therapy or pastoral counseling.

01

An Initial Mentoring Session

Begin with a one-hour session focused on your professional experience, the questions you bring, and the responsibilities and challenges you want to examine.

02

A Focused Discussion

Using a prepared agenda and handout, we discuss professional judgment, integrity, vocation, and the questions most relevant to your experience.

03

Reflection After the Session

A reflection assignment gives you an opportunity to consider the questions we discussed in light of your own professional experience.

04

A Tailored Follow-Up Recommendation

After the initial session, I recommend whether and how further mentoring could address the questions you want to pursue.
